Otep - Remember to Forget

During the late 90’s to the early ’00s I was a very active member in Marilyn Manson fan forums, where I met all sort of colorful characters. One of them, a guy either named David or some other non-descript name with the handle of “TOKILLAGOD”, stands on my memory since we used to talk via AIM until late at night, though those talks consisted entirely of swapping the bands we would find and the pains we went to find music from those bands. One night, he told me about Otep.

TOKILLAGOD: Dude, listen to Otep.

DSKZERO: (after a few minutes) this shit is just another nu-metal band.

TOKILLAGOD: But the singer is a woman!

DSKZERO: OMGWTFBBQ

And so, the long and inconsistent relationship between Otep and I began, and Otep Shamaya became instantly the hottest woman in the universe for the next five minutes, when I found pictures and not only realized she wasn’t that insanely hot, but she also was - and probably still is - a really outspoken woman, which is an euphemism for “SHE CAN’T SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT KILLING ANIMALS AND EATING MEAT”. Seriously, check out any interview. You’ll know she’s a lesbian, a vegan and mother Gaia within the first paragraph. People are absolutely obssesed about her being a lesbian for some reason. Most likely not Miss Shamayan’s fault, though.

Furthermore, you don’t know how frustrating is when people totally have to say “OPETH” whenever I mention “OTEP”.

Nonetheless, nowadays I don’t really feel that offended (mostly because I don’t really care anymore about the band I listen’s views of the world… nor do I really read interviews anyway) Otep is a pretty awesome band which has grown despite their absolute lack of mainstream success. It’s nu-metal, but it’s good nu-metal and their last album, Atavist, is really, really good.
